Epsom Area Guide

A thriving market town, Epsom enjoys the benefits of a busy high street and diverse range of shopping and leisure facilities with the wide open spaces of the Epsom Downs and beyond. Neighboured by Ewell, Banstead, Walton on the Hill and Sutton it is very popular with commuters thanks to the direct train services to London Victoria and London Waterloo. The borough of Epsom and Ewell was named by Location, Location, Location on Channel 4 as the "Best Place to Live" in the United Kingdom.  It also ranked in the top ten of the Halifax Quality of Life Survey 2011.

It’s famous for the Derby and the Oaks races, held annually at the Epsom Downs Racecourse and is the origin of Epsom Salts, a popular health remedy since 1618.

Other facilities in and around the town include the Rainbow Centre with gym, sports facilities and swimming pool, Hobbledown children's farm near Horton Park and Chessington World of Adventures, which is also close by.

With décor slightly resembling your mad Aunt Doris’ living room, this cosy bar/restaurant is different to the other more conservative options in Epsom high street, but that just adds to the appeal. Thankfully brunch is served all day, there is a vegan and gluten free menu, a kids menu, decent burgers and tasty mains on offer. Book a table, it gets busy.

This local theatre hosts comedians, local am dram groups, tribute acts and musicals straight from national tours with reasonably priced tickets and parking right next door. Great for culture vultures who don’t want to make the trip into the West End.

EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE, Epsom Downs, Surrey, KT18 5LQ

Home to the famous Epsom Derby, this racecourse has been home to many a fine filly since 1661 when Charles II was in attendance. Since then the most popular race day is ‘Derby Day’ preceded by Ladies Day where there is a prize for the best dressed. Well worth a day out and some money spent on a new outfit. The racecourse also hosts outdoor music events throughout the year.
