Create a calm ambience

You may relish carefree chaos at home but buyers will find it hard to see past the clutter to get a feel for the structure. Below we have provided our top tips from small to large on how to create a soothing ambience throughout the house.

DECLUTTER THE HALLWAY
A cluttered hallway can make buyers feel cramped and overwhelmed. To improve the space, consider affordable storage solutions inspired by our favourite Swedish furniture store. For small, narrow hallways, use wall-mounted coat hooks to keep coats and umbrellas organised. Minimising the number of garments can also help reduce bulk and create a more open feel. These stylish coat hooks are only £5 for a pack of 5:

This hat rack with built in coat hooks is a steal at £29. If you don’t wear hats, you can place wicker baskets on top for stylish storage of handbags and shoes.

This versatile shoe rack starts at just £25 and can be stacked to create larger storage solutions, fitting any space you need.

CHOOSE NEUTRAL SHADES

Some rooms can successfully use dark colors, while others benefit from lighter tones. A small downstairs cloakroom can embrace bold patterns and rich emeralds, while a north-facing room feels cozier with darker hues. However, to attract buyers and create a more spacious feel, neutral tones are ideal. These can be warm to avoid feeling impersonal, with colour added through furniture and accessories that are easily changeable. For inspiration, we’ve turned to Farrow and Ball, a leader in colour mixing.
No. 2003 Pointing is delicate white with a warm undertone to soften a room: https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/pointing
No. 4 Old White is a traditional neutral that changes colour in different spaces, looking a subdued green in north-facing rooms whilst more of a classic grey in lighter spaces.

No. 241 Skimming Stone is a stony off white with warm light grey undertones particularly suited to soothing bedroom schemes.

No. 293 Jitney has a brown based earthy tone. With more depth of colour than a regular neutral it works well with the complementary Dimity white.

ENHANCE LIGHT AND CREATE THE ILLUSION OF SPACE

It wasn’t just Snow White’s stepmother who recognised the magic of mirrors. Interior designers use them to brighten dark corners and add depth to narrow hallways. Unique shapes can serve as striking centrepieces, enhancing a room’s aesthetic without needing to introduce colour into neutral tones. We’ve looked to fashion and homeware specialist Next to see what they have to offer concerning stylish but affordable mirrors:
Free-standing full-length mirrors make a statement in a bedroom or living room and can open up a dead end corridor. This champagne gold beaded mirror will add a touch of dramatic elegance at only £110.
